Mirror Work in Eating Disorder & Body Image Healing
Mirror work can be a powerful tool in eating disorder recovery—but only when done in a way that feels safe, consensual, and empowering. Too often, body image interventions are framed around forced positivity or unrealistic leaps toward self-love. But true healing isn’t about loving what you see in the mirror—it’s about shifting the relationship you have with your reflection, on your terms.
✅ Start small: A quick glance, a neutral observation, or even just standing near a mirror without engaging—your pace, your choice.
✅ Prioritize safety: Mirror work isn’t for everyone at every stage of recovery. If it feels distressing, that’s valid. You get to decide when (or if) you engage.
✅ Move toward neutrality: Instead of focusing on appearance, try noticing function, sensation, or even non-body-related details (like lighting or colors).
✅ Reject harmful power dynamics: Your therapist is there to support, not dictate. You are the expert on your experience, and interventions should respect that.
✅ No “right” way: Whether you never do mirror work or slowly build up over time, your path is your own—and that’s enough.
Recovery isn’t about forcing self-love; it’s about reclaiming autonomy over your body and your healing. You are allowed to take up space, just as you are.
