What happens in a Somatic Experiencing (SE) session?

A somatic experiencing session is a gentle, client-centered approach to healing trauma that focuses on the body's responses to stress and traumatic experiences. Developed by Peter Levine, this therapeutic method explores how the nervous system processes and stores traumatic memories.

When a client first arrives, the session begins with a comfortable, collaborative conversation. The therapist creates a safe, supportive environment and explains that the focus will be on tracking bodily sensations and understanding how the nervous system responds to stress.

The client will typically remain fully clothed and may be seated or lying down, depending on what feels most comfortable. Unlike traditional talk therapy, the SE practitioner guides the client to pay close attention to physical sensations, body movements, and internal experiences rather than solely discussing traumatic events.

The therapist will help the client slow down and notice subtle bodily sensations, such as:

- Muscle tension

- Breathing patterns

- Temperature changes

- Subtle movements or impulses

- Emotional responses felt in the body

Through careful, compassionate guidance, the therapist assists the client in:

- Identifying where stress or trauma is stored in the body

- Recognizing and releasing trapped fight, flight, or freeze responses

- Developing greater body awareness

- Learning to regulate the nervous system

- Gradually discharging traumatic energy that may have been held for years

A typical session might involve gentle techniques like:

- Slow, mindful breathing exercises

- Subtle body movements

- Tracking physical sensations

- Exploring bodily responses to memories or current stressors

- Practicing grounding techniques

The goal is not to re-traumatize the client by revisiting painful memories but to help the nervous system process and release stored trauma gradually and safely. Sessions focus on creating a sense of safety, empowerment, and bodily resilience.
